The Return of the Sixties

This political blog is back after a more than six-month hiatus - for which I apologize. Other priorities have intervened at an alarming rate and also I was waiting to see how the recent “Occupy Wall Street” movement, so redolent of the sixties, would pan out. The final results are not yet in of course, but the movement seems to definitely have legs, a fact that is encouraging in this time when so much in our society needs to be rearranged. I will have more to say on the topic of this important social movement later on in this article. Meanwhile another important protest is gathering momentum and giving the current administration fits as it tries to decide on its actual environmental policy, namely the dissent over the Keystone Pipeline, a project that will bridge Canada and the U.S. and create jobs but only at the cost of enormous environmental destruction in mining the tar sands of northern Alberta province.

This protest is unique in that it involves some very big and even moneyed names that have been staunch democratic boosters for many years. They are so incensed about the proposed pipeline and the threat of the Obama administration’s approval – which they see as caving in to Big Oil, Big Money, and a Republican agenda – that rather than attend a recent $5,000 per head Obama campaign fund raiser in San Francisco, they picketed outside it. At issue is the attack on the environment from Big Oil, which has been unremitting, including paying for so-called scientific studies that declared invalid the concept of global warming, a fact that is otherwise universally accepted by the scientific community. The Republicans are on board with this debunking as well, of course, whatever allows the oil companies to make more money. In it he explains that by putting our money into retooling, oil and gasoline can be eliminate by 2050 and this achieved while saving gobs of money. Keystone Pipeline Protest

The Keystone Pipeline protestors plan to bring 5,000 people to Washington on Sunday, November 6th to remind the Obama administration that people are definitely concerned regarding his environmental stand, or its lack. In the words of one environmentalist this will be an important test of character for the President. A look at the transits to the U.S. chart for that date is instructive. See chart. It is of note that transiting Mars opposes transiting Neptune that day, while Neptune is in conjunction with U.S. Moon representing the public, and also nearly exactly sesquiquadrate to U.S. Sun. Pluto opposes U.S. Jupiter, the chart ruler. An exact conjunction of Mercury and Venus aspects U.S. Jupiter also.

This protest will be a litmus test of where the administration is prepared to compromise its ideals and also of the will of the people in opposition, and is therefore one iconic flashpoint. The occupy Wall Street protests are another. These began in September and are showing no sign of going away any time soon. We had the Arab Spring of protests against living conditions across the Middle East, and we now have the American Autumn. Of course this is predicted by the Uranus-Pluto square, the first dynamic alignment since the sixties, when they were in conjunction, and when they characterized the revolutionary struggle of those times. Hence, astrologers have been saying for years now that there would be “people in the streets.” I myself have said it, probably in this very blog that you are reading. Last month’s issue of The Mountain Astrologer, in preparation over the summer, mentioned the Wisconsin protests from last March and the Arab Spring and asked the relevant question: Where were the massive American protests? By the time the magazine was out they had their answer.

Occupy Wall Street

Of course the relevant transits here refer back to the square between Uranus and Pluto, within 2 degrees of exact in mid-September when the OWS protest movement began, and in this regard it is interesting to note that Uranus was opposed at that time to both the U.S. Midheaven, and to transiting Venus, making a T-square with U.S. Venus, which is the Midheaven ruler. The United States had also recently completed its Saturn return, and Saturn is located in the 10th house. The position of transiting Pluto is interesting in that it opposes U.S. Jupiter, which is the chart ruler. Transiting Jupiter was contra-parallel to U.S. Moon, representing the public, while the Moon that day was in a forming square to U.S. Moon and Neptune is conjunct U.S. Moon, representing idealism.

A look at the current transits (for November 6th, see above) shows that Mars opposes transiting Neptune and U.S. Moon, as we mentioned earlier, while Pluto now even more closely opposes U.S. Jupiter. On November 6th, the date set for the Keystone Pipeline protest, the Moon aspects transiting Neptune as it conjuncts U.S. Moon and makes a dynamic aspect to U.S. Sun, a fitting symbol for idealism in action.

We cannot leave the subject of American protest movements in general without referring back to the most massive protest since the sixties against an American war, which was world-wide. I am referring to February 15th 2003, when over one million anti-war protestors took to the streets in advance of the invasion of Iraq. So many, across the Western world and beyond, were motivated to oppose this senseless war, a war that has of course proven to be extremely costly, both in money and in terms of lives lost. One would think that Uranus and Pluto were involved at that time, even before their square became close enough to count.

Massive Anti-War Protest

A look at the transiting chart is quite interesting. Transiting Uranus was indeed involved, at 28 degrees of Aquarius at the time, and conjunct U.S. Moon (again representing the public) while being also sesquiquadrate to U.S. Sun, the same position that Neptune now occupies. Meanwhile Pluto, about to station, emphasized the military by opposing U.S. Mars, while transiting Mars in the first house of the U.S. chart was exactly conjunct transiting Pluto. Pluto crossed into the U.S. First House of identity shortly after September 11, 2001, the 9-11 attacks. The Iraq War was, of course, a response to 9-11. Transiting Neptune is in this picture as well, making a sextile aspect to the U.S. Ascendant, while Jupiter, triggered by the Moon that day, opposed Neptune.

In regard to the protest movement that we are currently experiencing, understanding the Astrology is quite valuable, because it gives us an idea of the eventual scale of what is going on all across the country. We are at the very beginning of a series of exact squares between Uranus and Pluto that will take place through 2015, and through January 2020 when we consider the trailing 10 degree separation favored by noted Astrologer Richard Tarnas. Knowing this as we do, we can recognize that we are on the edge of even more massive protest and an escalation also of the conditions for protest. The “Turbulent Teens” are only just beginning!

Egypt and Wisconsin

For years astrologers have been saying it: the sixties are coming back. With this oncoming Uranus-Pluto square approaching like a freight train in this penultimate year before 2012 and the first of seven exact hits in June of that year, astrologers have been saying that people would be out in the streets again, just as they were 40 or more years ago, protesting an inhuman set of economic conditions and an unwinnable war. And it’s happening.

For an example of what I’m talking about, evidence that the times indeed are a’changin’ check out Michael Moore’s appearance the weekend of March 5th in Madison Wisconsin. There, protests had reached mammoth proportions over on actions on the part of a Republican governor and state legislators that threatened the removal of collective bargaining rights from public sector employees due to one of many budget crises at the state level all across the country. Moore’s speech, entitled “America is not Broke,” electrified the crowd as he compared the ongoing protests to the successful people’s movement in Egypt that toppled long-time dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Republic of Egypt

In this blog entry I would like to emphasize the connection between such different types of events as the Wikileaks release of U.S. foreign policy State Department cables, the demonstrations in Egypt’s Tahrir Square, and the subsequent demonstrations across the Middle East and in Wisconsin. This might seem like a stretch but the charts tell the story. First we will need the chart for the modern Republic of Egypt. As found in The Book of World Horoscopes, an excellent reference work by British astrologer Nick Campion, the most appropriate chart is for the establishment of the Nasser regime on the evening of June 18, 1953. See Egypt chart. Mubarak took over the dictatorship when Nasser was subsequently assassinated.

Egypt's transits for 1/25/2011

When the demonstrations began in Egypt, on January 25th 2011, Saturn was stationing retrograde and therefore greatly emphasized, at 17 ¼ degrees of Libra, almost directly on US Saturn. The question comes up of where this stationing Saturn and the rest of the outer planets hit Egypt’s chart. The answer is that Saturn was within three degrees of a conjunction with that nation’s Saturn, indicating pressure on the government. See Egypt's transits for 1/25/2011. The US Saturn degree is 14 plus Libra, while Egypt’s Saturn lies at 20 plus, so that the midpoint of US and Egypt Saturn is at 17 degrees and about 40 minutes – with stationing Saturn only ½ of a degree away as the protests began there, ultimately affecting both governments. The other significant transits to this chart for the Republic of Egypt are to the Sun degree, as might be expected, since the leadership of the nation and the character of its people are affected. The Sun degree is 27 Gemini, and the transiting degree of Uranus (= sudden change) is 27 Pisces, exactly square. Meanwhile, transiting Neptune, representing in this case aspiration/idealism as well as perhaps media, and also Chiron, representing pain, embarrassment and suffering, was at 27 degrees of Aquarius, trining Egypt’s Sun degree. Of course it was the pain and suffering of the people, together with their aspirations for a better way of life, that lead to the massive and determined protests. These transits are significant and serve to confirm this chart as accurate.

Egypt's transits for 11/28/2010

Now it is interesting to see that in the transits for November 28, 2010, the date of the most recent Wikileaks announcements, which revealed in part the propping up of Egypt’s dictatorship by the US government, transiting Mercury was at 27 degrees of Sagittarius, directly opposite Egypt’s Sun, indicating that a message was received. There are many other connections between the transits for this date and Egypt’s chart, too many to go into in detail, including transiting Venus exactly on the 7th house cusp of foreign partners. It makes sense. The publication of the information regarding US foreign policy support for Mubarak was cited as one of the inspirations for the uprising.

USA's transits for 2/15/2011

Now I’d like to turn to events in Wisconsin, where another protest rages on, as of this writing, in spite of a ruling by the state legislature that that seems to deny the protestors their desire, namely that public workers unions not be disbanded and prevented from the right to collective bargaining. The attempt by the Republican governor and legislature to rescind those rights is particularly ironic, considering that Madison, Wisconsin, was the place where collective bargaining rights for public workers was first established, back in 1931. This protest began on February 15th and the transits to the US chart for this date are particularly apt. See USA's transits for 2/15/2011.

The Sun and Neptune were conjunct U.S. Moon, symbolizing the public. Neptune in this case could be seen to represent the idealism implicit in the protests. The Sun that day was in aspect with U.S. Neptune, the U.S. Ascendant, and U.S. Saturn as well – Saturn representing the government. This last aspect is a sesquiquadrate, or minor square (a stressful aspect). Also transiting Venus, the 10th house ruler in the U.S. chart, and ruler of U.S. Saturn, was transiting in almost exact opposition to U.S. Sun that day. The United States is still in the middle of its Saturn Return, a time of great change, with transiting Saturn only 2 degrees away, in forming conjunction to U.S. Saturn. In an indication of the fact that this was an important media event, and that these protests do indeed send a message, U.S. Mercury was also involved, representing the media in this country. The Moon conjuncted U.S. Mercury that day, while transiting Mars (militancy) was exactly quincunx. Transiting Chiron, newly in compassionate Pisces, made a bi-quintile aspect to U.S. Mercury; at the same time the transiting Moon was square U.S. Chiron. It was the painful and embarrassing place (Chiron) that Wisconsin public workers found themselves in that was the source of the outrage that fueled the protests.

How does this relate back to the situation in Egypt? The protest erupted in Madison just days after Hosni Mubarak was forced to resign, on February 11th. Moore referenced that successful public protest in his Madison speech. The world might indeed be quite a bit smaller than we once thought.

Embarrassment in High Places

There have been several important and interesting stories in the news recently but the most interesting came on the very last weekend of November in exact correspondance with the Last Quarter Moon at 6 plus degrees of Virgo and Sagittarius. This was the most recent Wikileaks scandal – the simultaneous publishing to several news services of 250,000 State Department documents and cables to foreign embassy personnel. This event has been termed a major diplomatic crisis and condemned by the U.S. government. Some of the cables were signed by Hillary Clinton personally.

In order to assess the meaning of this event, and to get a clue as to how significant this leak of information is in terms of this country’s evolving history, in advance of seeing how it plays out over time, we can check the transits to the U.S. chart for their general import.

This was a very significant set of transits. First of all, Saturn at 14 degrees and 22 minutes of Libra is within half a degree from U.S. Saturn, or in other words, the United States is experiencing its Saturn return – which happens only once in every thirty years – just as this event transpires. Saturn, located in the U.S 10th House, represents the executive branch, which is the part of government most embarrassed by the incident. Three exact hits in all will eventually take place, on December 3rd of this year and in March and at the end of August, 2011, nine months from now. We might therefore very well expect to see some of this event’s repercussions surface by next spring and summer. Secondly, when the Last Quarter Moon took place a little after 3 PM on the East Coast, the Sun was exactly trine this country’s North Node, located at 6 Leo 35. This also speaks to the significance of this event for the future, especially since the natal U.S. North Node is located in the 8th House of transformation, or death and rebirth. The Sun’s position also formed a sesquiquadrate to both U.S. Chiron and to U.S. Mercury, which are square to each other in the U.S. chart. There is national shame involved (Chiron) and also of course the media (Mercury). The Sun also opposed U.S. Uranus, which speaks to the sudden (unexpected until a few days ago) nature of the leak of the documents, which had the State Department scrambling for damage control. Transiting Mars and transiting Jupiter also strongly aspected the U.S. Mercury degree, and Mars opposed U.S. Mars as well, representing the military. U.S. Neptune was strongly aspected by these planets also, by square and by opposition, so that the fog of illusion and disinformation that we have frequently commented upon comes into the picture now as well. Pluto and the transiting North Node are also exactly opposed to U.S. Venus / Jupiter, located in the U.S. chart’s 7th House – representing relations with foreign governments – and these relations are sure to be very much impacted by the revelations contained in these documents. Finally, transiting Neptune and Chiron in exact conjunction are conjunct the U.S. Moon, representing the public, within one degree.

The Neptune emphasis is very pronounced, and symbolizes the equivocal nature of the event. Is this a case of “truth will out” for a positive spin or is it actually a mistaken zeal for truth that will make things more difficult for those attempting to keep the world running smoothly? Only time will tell. Right now these are all parts of the picture, various illusions that the leakers represent, and perhaps none of them is the real “truth” of the matter.

It is very interesting also to examine the parallel to the Pentagon Papers scandal from the sixties. Astrologers have been saying for years now that the teens will markedly resemble the turbulent sixties, and here is one more example. Once again, an interminable war is being fought on foreign soil for dubious diplomatic purpose, in this case in two different countries. Again these are seen as a morass that the United States cannot extricate itself from without losing face in the court of world opinion. Once again there are many who are opposed to this war, although the level of public protest certainly has not reached that of the marches of the sixties. And once again there are leaked documents which might gain in significance as the war continues on. The stated intention of the Wikileaks project was to present evidence of torture and other violations of international law and of civil liberties that were promulgated by both the Republican administration of George W. Bush and by that of his successor, President Obama. In regard to the latter assertion, an interesting story was published by Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now, on November 9th, just after the Scorpio New Moon of early November, which also strongly aspected the U.S. chart. It ran as follows:

U.S. Defends Right to Assassinate U.S. Citizens

The Obama administration argued Monday that the White House should have unreviewable authority to target and assassinate American citizens anywhere in the world if they pose a threat to the United States. The argument was made in federal court in response to a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights. The groups are representing Nasser al-Awlaki, who brought a lawsuit in connection with the government’s decision to authorize the targeted killing of his son, Anwar al-Awlaki, a U.S.-born Muslim cleric now living in Yemen. Jameel Jaffer of the ACLU said, "If the Constitution means anything, it surely means that the president does not have unreviewable authority to summarily execute any American whom he concludes is an enemy of the state."

We live in perilous times, not only for the threatened individual, but for the threatened democracy that we cherish. All we can do at the moment is to keep our heads up and our eyes open and pitch in where we can. We also serve the eventual and inevitable evolution of our society by staying as alert as possible to the deeper meaning of events as they unfold.

The Fog of Neptune

Transits to the U.S. Chart – November 2010

This month, in the weeks following the election, Neptune stations direct on U.S. Moon, bringing up the notion of the ways in which the U.S. public (represented by the Moon in the national chart) might be either living in a dream world of their own making, or perhaps just outright deceived.

Other important transits are happening in this end-of-year period, and they serve to remind us that the wheel’s still in spin, and that although the hour is growing late, no die is finally cast. It is up to us to make the most of this moment, just as it is up to us to make the most out of every moment. In the first week of December, Uranus stations direct as well, making a strong aspect to U.S. Pluto as it does so. The New Moon of November 5th, just after the election, aspects both Uranus and Pluto, just as Pluto conjuncts the North Node and while the Uranus-Pluto square, hibernating during the winter months, is getting ready to make an enormous come-back in the spring and later, on into 2012. At the same time as the Uranus station on December 5th, the U.S. Chart is experiencing its Saturn Return, an occurrence that takes place approximately every thirty years. The last time this happened, there was a preliminary hit in November 1980, followed by the actual completion nearly a year later in October 1981. It is useful to recall the election cycle of 1980 that put Ronald Reagan into the White House in 1981 and ended the somewhat idealistic presidency of Jimmy Carter. Are there any similarities that we can find to our own times?

In other postings I have written extensively about all the Neptune influences on the U.S. chart these days, and what they might imply for the natal U.S. Neptune-Mars square, and for issues of deception in high places and with respect to the military. Specifically, transiting Neptune on U.S. Moon: Neptune has been hovering around U.S. Moon for many months, since roughly the beginning of 2010, continuing into 2011; transiting Uranus opposed to U.S. Neptune, which was active for 2008 and 2009, but has steadily faded in 2010 to be replaced however by Jupiter – active now and until mid-December; and there was also the Saturn transit in conjunction with U.S. Neptune in the summer of 2009. All these taken together represent a great deal of Neptunian confusion throughout the land.

It does indeed seem like there has been a fog of unreason in the national psyche for these last few years. First we had the very hopeful time of the election of President Obama, with the implied liberal fantasy of equality and energy policy reversals from the excesses of the Bush years. But, not so. Some feeble efforts at passing a health care bill with teeth in it. Lip service to ending one of the two costly wars that have gripped the nation since 9-11, but the results there seem more than a little muted, with permanent bases in Iraq still manned by U.S soldiers under slightly different orders of engagement and a civilian mercenary presence that is still very real and perhaps even stronger than before the summer of 2010 when things were supposed to be winding down. Then there is climate change – perhaps the most important priority of all, given the state of the planet, but the least successful of all, with little if any progress from the first years of the new century. Why? Because corporate interests do not run in the same direction, and money talks very loudly in 21st century America. But it is not so much the influence peddling that is the problem, but the lack of recognition on the part of the population. Again, the fog, the unawareness.

In all of this there is really no-one to blame but ourselves. It is tempting to blame the Obama White House, which after all is said and done has in many ways resembled the Bush White House, especially in regard to foreign and energy policy. The regulatory agency tasked with overseeing off-shore oil drilling – and what a great job they are doing – in the early part of the year referred to what they called the “third Bush term.” But all politicians are basically weather vanes, and the wind in present-day America just isn’t blowing hard enough to change the existing status quo.

This brings us back to the question: do these times that we are living through right now resemble the era of the 1980s, when it was said that “greed is good” and when conservative ideas of non-government triumphed to the joy of the very wealthy, and could this be the case even though we have a Democratic president in the White House? It does seem that the nation is even more off-course than when Reagan took over, wresting it from the liberal, albeit short-lived, policies of his predecessor and ripping the solar panels off the White House roof. Obama plans to put them up again, in a largely symbolic gesture, but will he succeed in making alternative energy a true priority? Of course, this is the real issue. It does seem that the corporate hijacking of the American government will continue, with the help of unconscious Tea Party advocates of “less government,” unless and until the public throws off their blinders and makes the courageous act of looking the ugly facts of the matter squarely in the face. With the powerful transits coming up over the next few years – which I have discussed in previous postings and will describe more fully in later ones – I think that there is a real chance for change, but it will take all of us, and it will take everything we’ve got.

Why the exposing of deception?

Last month we indicated that the period from the 4th to the 11th, leading up to the Solar Eclipse that took place on the U.S. Sun / Mercury midpoint, and the days immediately following the Full Moon of Sunday, July 25th, might be an important time for media revelations that serve to shake us up and expose the hypocrisy and deception of our American age. Why the exposing of deception? As the Cardinal T-square makes difficult aspects to the U.S. Midheaven, representing the powers that be, transiting Neptune (deception) remains on U.S Moon, representing the public, and was closely aspected by Saturn as well during this period. It is interesting to peruse the headlines before and immediately after last month’s key lunations. Many of these headlines occurred on July 7th, a day when both transiting Mercury and Moon strongly aspected U.S. Mercury, representing the media.

BP Oil Spill of 2010. This is of course the news story that is on everyone’s mind, almost as big in its own way as 911. The country has been shaken to its very foundations, especially by the manifest lack of competence and intentional misinformation, as well as the absence of governmental oversight or control of Big Oil in general and BP in particular. Last month the revelations continued. Leading up to the Sunday eclipse date, on July 8th Democracy Now! reported:

BP meanwhile says it’s now aiming to seal off the well by the end of the month, weeks before the company’s public deadline. The new July 27th target coincides with BP’s date to report second-quarter earnings and speak to investors.

The coincidence of dates is too good to be accidental. Of course the issue is PR versus actual benefit to the environment; a similar concern to what was raised when BP took out millions of dollars worth of ads in the wake of the disaster. BP has also been accused of being more concerned with image over substance in initially under-reporting the actual estimated flow from the ruptured well. Interestingly, on July 12th, the day after the Solar Eclipse, a former contractor of BP was quoted on New Orleans radio station WDSU (according to Democracy Now) as follows: “the bottom line is just about money. There are some very cutthroat individuals. They’re not worried about cleaning up that spill as it is... I will never have loyalty to this company. I will always have loyalty to my country. And my country comes first. What this company is doing to this country right now is just wrong."
In other news – on July 7, Democracy Now reported that a US Army whistle-blower named Bradley Manning was charged with releasing a video of indiscriminant killings of civilians in Iraq and over 50 State Department memos to the Wikileaks site. This story had a follow-up at the time of the subsequent Full Moon on July 25th when over 90,000 memos from Iraq were leaked to the same Australian Internet site. In a follow-up to the McChrystal firing, the U.S. Military announced new guidelines for magazine or other interviews. This item also appeared in the week between July 4th and 11th, namely on July 7th. Under the new rules, top-level Pentagon and military officials must first receive clearance before agreeing to any interviews or public engagement. Democracy Now!
Also on the same day, President Obama met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and asserted that Israel has “shown restraint” in recent months, this while the issue of West Bank settlements is still brewing and after the well-publicized attack on a flotilla coming to the aid of Gaza that killed 9. The statement seems calculated to allay suspicions of any rift between the two countries. Israel also attacked Gaza for 22 days at the very beginning of 2009, just before President Obama took office, although he has always failed to comment on this act.
Finally, on July 9th a story surfaced that a tape existed of a conversation between Kissinger and Nixon discussing a CIA assassination in Chile on the eve of the overthrow of Salvador Allende. The only newsworthy part of the disclosure was that the U.S. had previously claimed no CIA involvement. For the full story see Democracy Now!

The above referenced news items all show a powerful undercurrent of information counter to the official Government story, that is becoming available over this summer timeframe, and of course in particular during the key lunations that trigger these strong outer planet alignments. Next month the same argument applies to both the New Moon of August 9th and also to the Full Moon period surrounding August 24th.

At the beginning of last month we indicated that there might be more issues that would arise in the mid-June time period, with the continuing pressure on the U.S. Midheaven, or MC (Medium Coeli) and also on Venus, the MC ruler. In fact we stated that the ongoing severity of these transits “indicates a rough ride for the U.S government, possibly in connection with military operations, as the events of this climactic year continue to unfold.” Of course the big news last month in that area was the surprising and sudden resignation of General McChrystal, both United States and NATO commander for the coalition forces in Afghanistan, after a raucous Rolling Stone article aired his comments of insubordination and lack of regard for his commander-in-chief. It is instructive to take a look at the transits to the U.S. chart for that day, June 23rd.

What was unique in that day’s transits as opposed to rest of the the month’s were of course the fast-moving positions of Sun and Moon, and with the rest of the personal planets The Sun was at 2 degrees of Cancer, therefore exactly square to the U.S. Midheaven, and also conjoining U.S. Venus. This, in and of itself, is of course not a major transit, but it is a triggering factor in coordination with the Cardinal T-square that hits this same set of sensitive points. Uranus and Jupiter are currently and were then opposed and Pluto square to the U.S. MC at 2 degrees of Libra, while Saturn draws neigh. The Uranus-Jupiter conjunction was in fact still quite close, with Jupiter only a few minutes of a degree away from its opposition to U.S MC. The Moon, in the last degree of Scorpio, made a sesquiquadrate aspect that morning to U.S. Sun, during the fateful meeting between McChrystal and president Obama. The Moon also squared transiting Neptune within a degree, which even now remains in close conjunction with U.S. Moon, representing the public. Even transiting Mercury, Venus and Mars got into the act. Transiting Venus was sextile U.S. Uranus, an indication of the suddenness of this event, while also making an exact septile to U.S. Midheaven. Mars exactly squared U.S. Uranus. Mercury, representing the media, trined U.S. Moon within a degree. With the Afghanistan war in question anyway, and the purported timetable for withdrawal only a year off, the firing of its leader became a media circus.

With Neptune so clearly in the picture of these transits, since it currently conjoins U.S. Moon, the element of deception becomes a possible issue. Was there anything about this event that was not strictly out in the open? There has of course been speculation that McChrystal’s political suicide in the Rolling Stone Magazine article was, rather than a collection of chance remarks, more precisely an exit strategy from an unwinnable war. His letter of resignation in his hand, he traveled stateside for his meeting with the president already packed and ready to leave the Afghanistan theater; he has now announced his retirement. In the midst of all this public drama, what is also called into question is an increasingly unpopular strategy for winning hearts and minds in Afghanistan while defeating an elusive and entrenched enemy, even as civilian causalities continue to mount. This particular conflict in fact evokes many comparisons to the Vietnam War era, when a similar contrast of goals was very much in the news. It seems that the political solution that President Obama has called for, and constantly emphasizes, must be somehow reconciled with the brute force represented by military action. So the entire motivation for this war of perhaps invasion is very cloudy.

Neptune emerges from his current close collision with U.S. Moon and enters Pisces, his own sign, in the spring of 2011, and this might well indicate that this would be a time for new developments in this area of the public perception of the Afghan war. This is also when the current timetable for withdrawal of U.S. forces is just about to begin.

In this next month of the summer of 2010, the Cardinal T-square gets even more intense, especially within the July 4th – July 11th period and also with the Full Moon of July 25th. Further events that shake up the established leadership and power of America vis-à-vis the world are quite likely to result.

When May’s configurations showed pressure last month on the U.S. Mars-Neptune square it seemed logical to imagine that there might be issues of deception and the military that would come to light again during May’s mid-month New Moon, which took place on May 13th. A sampling of the news stories from that very day is revealing.

First – in Afghanistan:

Obama Addresses Rise of Civilian Casualties in Afghanistan

President Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai met at the White House Wednesday. Karzai is on his first trip to Washington since President Obama expanded the war in Afghanistan by ordering the deployment of 30,000 more troops. During a press conference, President Obama addressed the rising number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan.

President Obama: “When there is a civilian casualty, that is not just a political problem for me. I am ultimately accountable, just as General McChrystal is accountable, for somebody who is not on the battlefield who got killed. And that is something that I have to carry with me and that anybody who’s involved in a military operation has to carry with them. And so we do not take that lightly. We have an interest in reducing civilian casualties not because it’s a problem for President Karzai; we have an interest in reducing civilian casualties because I don’t want civilians killed.”

President Obama did not detail how he or General. McChrystal are held accountable when US forces kill Afghan civilians. The number of civilians killed by US forces have spiked in recent years. In February, US and Afghan gunmen killed two pregnant mothers, a teenage girl and two local officials in a botched nighttime raid. US forces then tried to cover up the killings by claiming that the three women had been discovered bound and gagged, apparently killed execution style. Earlier this week, the New York Times revealed that the number of Afghan civilians shot by US and NATO convoys at military checkpoints has recently jumped. At least twenty-eight Afghans have been killed and forty-three wounded in convoy and checkpoint shootings this year.

Withdrawal of US Combat Troops from Iraq Delayed

The Guardian newspaper reports the White House is likely to delay the withdrawal of the first large phase of combat troops from Iraq for at least a month after escalating bloodshed and political instability in the country. The US commander, General Ray Odierno, had originally expected to give the order within sixty days of the general election held in Iraq on March 7. In a message to Congress yesterday, President Obama said the situation in Iraq continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.

Finally, remembering that among other things, Neptune rules oil, we must also consider the biggest environmental disaster ever associated with the oil industry, the Gulf Oil Spill of 2010. Of course this spill began earlier, with the explosion in April, and it is instructive to examine the transits for this date. But on the May 13th New Moon, the following story did also surface:

Report: Owner of Oil Rig Seeks to Limit Liability to $27M

The Dow Jones Newswire is reporting that Transocean, the owner and operator of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig that exploded and sank last month, is seeking to limit its liability to just under $27 million. The world’s biggest offshore driller is filing the request in the US District Court in Houston under a century-and-a-half-old law originally aimed at helping US ship owners compete with foreign-flagged vessels. Transocean’s rig was being leased by BP at the time of the April 20th explosion that killed eleven workers and caused the devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, evidence emerged Wednesday that the oil well failed a pressure test hours before the drilling rig exploded. Pressure tests are conducted to ensure the integrity of cement poured into the well to keep out natural gas. Congressman Henry Waxman discussed the test findings at a congressional hearing Wednesday.

Henry Waxman: "The anomalies in the pressure testing present a significant question that should be thoroughly investigated. Just hours before the explosion, tests on the well returned results that signaled a possible well failure and the influx of gas up the wall. Yet it appears that the companies did not suspend well operations, and now eleven workers are dead and the Gulf Coast region faces catastrophic environmental damages. We need to know if that’s the case and why it was the case."

Finally here are the relevant transits for the spill and ongoing leak – which took place at 11 PM on Tuesday, April 20th. Ironically the scope of the disaster only began to be discovered two days later - on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Here are the details of the U.S. transits. U.S. Neptune was indeed strongly constellated, with transiting Jupiter opposed and also exactly contra-parallel. Meanwhile the Moon was exactly sextile U.S. Neptune at the time of the accident, and semi-sextile Mars. The Moon in Cancer was also conjunct U.S. Mercury representing the media, while transiting Venus was sextile. The Sun, newly entered into Venus-ruled Taurus as befits Earth Day two days later, aspected the U.S. Sun, Venus and Midheaven. Neptune on U.S. Moon continued to indicate that confusion and deception were in the air. The U.S. public has been continuously misinformed by the BP oil company, regarding both the scope of the spill and its causes. Interestingly, the Moon also closely aspected U.S. Moon, representing the public, exact within 30 minutes of the time of the accident. The transiting Moon was also square U.S. Chiron, an indication of the painful nature of this incident, which continues to spew oil into the gulf waters at the time of this writing, with no end in sight. An important part of the United States fishing industry is located in the gulf. The transits to U.S. Mercury emphasize that the accident sends an important message. In this case one message is about the effects of greed, since the evidence is beginning to mount that safety regulations were ignored in an effort to make the well begin to produce faster in view of delays that had been experienced. BP was supposedly losing many millions a day over the delay in bringing in the well.

In the current month, the New Moon conjuncts U.S. Mars, once more bringing the military into the picture as well as further issues of deception. The transits that are most critical at the time of the New Moon are transiting Saturn in trine to U.S Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter in opposition to U.S. Midheaven as Pluto squares it, and Pluto’s opposition to U.S. Jupiter and Venus, the Midheaven ruler. Neptune continues to conjunct U.S. Moon, representing the public. Altogether these transits indicate a rough ride for the U.S government, possibly in connection with military operations, as the events of this climactic year continue to unfold.

Last month’s New Moon was in conjunction with U.S Chiron and square U.S. Mercury while aspecting U.S Neptune. At the same time the transiting positions of Neptune and Chiron remained in conjunction with U.S. Moon, representing the public. This indicates that deception regarding the true motives of U.S diplomacy could manifest, and that uncovering the truth of this deception could be a painful revelation for the public at large. In this regard it is interesting to note that on the very day of the New Moon, President Obama made his announcement regarding the Israeli peace process – detailed as follows in Democracy Now.

Obama: US Can’t Impose Mideast Peace

After the nuclear summit came to a close, Obama delivered a statement on the status of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Obama said he is frustrated by the slow pace of negotiations, but appeared to pin equal blame on both sides for the impasse.

President Obama: “I know that even if we are applying all of our political capital to that issue, the Israeli people, through their government, and the Palestinian people, through the Palestinian Authority, as well as other Arab states, may say to themselves, we are not prepared to resolve this—these issues, no matter how much pressure the United States brings to bear. And the truth is, in some of these conflicts, the United States can’t impose solutions unless the participants in these conflicts are willing to break out of old patterns of antagonism.”

Obama made no mention of Israel’s refusal to halt settlement construction in occupied East Jerusalem. The Obama administration has said it opposes the settlements, but has refused to propose cutting any of the billions of dollars in annual US aid to Israel.

It is interesting also to remember that in the weeks preceding his inauguration, Mr. Obama stood idly by and made no comment during the vicious attack on Gaza that killed at least 1200 civilians. It seems that in spite of claims of neutrality, the United States government has been solidly on the side of Israel, making only token protest of the continued settlements within occupied Palestine. For a trenchant analysis see this article by activist writer Noam Chomsky, published in Truthout.

In his article, Chomsky mentions specifically that the U.S. media seems complicit in exonerating the American government of any bias on the part of Israel. It is interesting that U.S. Mercury, representing the media, was involved in these recent mid-April transits.

For the current month of May, there are similar aspects brought about by the Taurus New Moon, taking place on May 13th, so that we might expect further developments in this story, or others like it. There are after all many examples of deception on the part of the U.S government, and involving the media.

Finally, at month’s end, when transiting Uranus enters Aries, there to square transiting Pluto, we might expect events that are even more dramatic, some of them involving revelations of deception, since transiting Neptune and Chiron are still very much involved. Uranus in Aries begins to oppose the U.S. Midheaven, and Pluto begins to square it. The summer of 2010 sees the full flowering of these aspects. In June, Jupiter joins Uranus, bringing unexpected events and epiphanies, and in July, Saturn re-enters Libra, completing the picture.

In September, Pluto stations in almost exact square to U.S. Midheaven, representing the government, with Saturn nearby, while transiting Chiron exactly conjuncts U.S. Moon, representing the public. These are therefore the dates to watch as we enter the third phase of major transition in this country.

Polarity and the End of Polarity

Last month we mentioned that the mid-month time period would be insightful and might have military implications. That was because as Neptune continued to conjunct U.S. Moon, the New Moon conjunct transiting Uranus was semi-sextile U.S. Moon and opposed to U.S. Neptune. Neptune can also represent deception. Mars in the U.S. chart represents the military, and Neptune is square to Mars in the U.S. chart. Deception with regard to what the military does in this country is of course widely recognized. In view of these mid-month transits it was very interesting to note that there was indeed an issue relating to deception in the military that came up at precisely this time.

This story broke on March 15th.

Contractors Tied to Effort to Track and Kill Militants
The Pentagon has launched a criminal investigation of a Defense Department official who set up a network of private contractors in Afghanistan and Pakistan to help track and kill suspected militants. The New York Times reports the official, Michael Furlong, has been accused of running an off-the-books spy operation with the help of private contractors who gathered intelligence on the whereabouts of suspected militants and the location of insurgent camps. It is generally considered illegal for the military to hire contractors to act as covert spies. Two of the contractors hired by the military were the writer Robert Young Pelton and Eason Jordan, the former chief news executive for CNN. Pelton said he and Jordan were hired by the military to run a public website to help the government gain a better understanding of the region but that their reporting was then used to kill people.

Of course the most interesting set of events this past month has been the passage of the long-awaited Health Care Bill by the House of Representatives, without a single Republican vote. The invective and posturing surrounding this effort were massive, with some representatives insulted by racial slurs as they showed up to vote for the bill on this recent historic Sunday, March 21st. This was just the time that the Sun reached the second degree of Aries, opposing Saturn and triggering the Saturn – Uranus opposition. This opposition, getting closer by the day now, was exact at the time of the last election, and is moving into another exact alignment by the end of April. This is another entirely appropriate set of astrological symbolism, since Saturn opposed to Uranus represents polarity of a massive kind, the motivation to hold back versus the urge to go forward.

Since Uranus is continuing to oppose Saturn even more closely at the end of this next month and also over the summer, we might expect that these types of controversy will become even more heated as the weeks go by, both in the collective and in our personal lives. It is essential in these times of conflicting ideas that we each and all of us attempt to take the high road, honoring the other one’s opinion no matter how diverse. Only by finding a third point of view that rises above seeming conflict will we be able to find some modicum of peace in these troubled times.

Inevitable Civilian Casualties?

Last month we noted that the mid-month time period was once more significant, since we would see the New Moon in conjunction with Neptune and Chiron making strong aspects to the U.S. Moon and Midheaven. Prognostication is tricky with Neptune, being such a slippery planet, but we did in fact witness some interesting mid-February activity, with the first civilian deaths from the U.S. military stepped-up anti-Taliban offensive in Helmand Province.

The following headline and story appeared on Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now:

12 Die as U.S. Bombs Wrong House as Part of New Afghan Offensive

Thousands of US and NATO forces have launched one of the largest military offensives of the eight-year war in an attempt to remove the Taliban from the city of Marjah in Helmand province. US officials have described the operation as a success so far, but on Sunday twelve Afghans died when two rockets fired by NATO slammed into the wrong house. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called for an investigation into the deaths. Ten of those killed were from the same family. The US said the dead included nine civilians and three insurgents. Prior to the errant bombing, Admiral Mike Mullen, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said a goal of the operation was to have no civilian casualties.

Of course there have been many more civilian deaths reported in the weeks following this report from February 15th – as many as three times the original number – but this was the first. The transit of Neptune and Chiron continued, and transiting Mars made a close aspect also to U.S. Midheaven in the weeks following the New Moon.

This report is interesting in the light of the Neptune transit, with the New Moon, to both the Midheaven and Ascendant of the U.S. chart as well as to the U.S. Moon at 27 Aquarius, only a degree away. There is certainly a confused attitude on the part of the public in this country and even within the administration. Is the war in Afghanistan producing inevitable civilian casualties because the U.S is defending its interests and waging a just and necessary war or is there another way to look at this foreign policy objective, begun under President Bush after 9-11 and continued by the Obama administration, as one that has become a quagmire with initial motives other than those officially stated in the beginning? Or even worse is there actual deception that is still ongoing? These questions are murky, as befits a Neptune transit. The U.S. public is definitely beginning to question the war in general.

With Chiron also involved we could even suspect that the American public is more concerned about the morality of this war than might be evident on the surface of public opinion, especially as revealed on the TV screen. If dozens of civilians in this country were killed by a series of bomb attacks directed at a criminal element but targeting “the wrong house” it is safe to assume that there would be a far greater outcry.

In the coming month the New Moon of course conjuncts Uranus and Mercury as Uranus sextiles U.S Pluto and opposes U.S. Neptune, while transiting Neptune conjuncts U.S. Moon exactly. It is also interesting to note that U.S. Uranus makes an inconjunct to U.S. Eris which can be linked to war-like activity just as Mars is. In Greek mythology, Eris was the mythological sister of Ares (Mars).

This combination of transits suggests unexpected events along the same lines as in the previous month, presumably involving the Afghan war but possibly relating to an equivalent issue elsewhere in the world. There will continue to be confusion on the part of the U.S. public and a growing empathy with the citizens of other lands that are directly impacted by military decisions made in Washington.

The Chart of Haiti

Last month we noted for January that the mid-month time of the Solar Eclipse and New Moon would be a dicey period, since Saturn was still conjunct the U.S. Midheaven while Pluto squared it. Some kind of test for this country was indicated. Indeed this was the time period of the devastating Haiti Earthquake that left 170,000 dead and more than one million homeless in its wake. Of course the quake was more of an impact on Haiti than on the Western world that was called to rise up in response, and the transits to the chart of Haiti were quite severe also, when examined for the date and time of the original quake, 1/12/2010 at 16:53 EST (for an analysis see below). But the test to the responsive abilities of America was also of great interest given the transits to the U.S. chart for the eclipse date, two days after the quake itself and just when the international response was getting underway. The response of the Western powers has to get poor marks overall, although many people were helped and lives saved by the actions of the international community, lead by the United States. There were many mistakes made while getting food and medical relief to the hundreds of thousands of wounded and refugee population, mostly because it was the U.S. military that was handed this mission. Instead of aid delivery, military presence and security were prioritized.

On Friday, January 15, the U. S. military took over the airport and supervised the eventual deployment of 15,000 troops, mostly to keep order. Meanwhile, of seven hospital planes that attempted to land over the following weekend, only one was allowed to land in Port-au-Prince, the rest being told to land many miles away in the Dominican Republic. As a result, much-needed medicine had a much further route to travel to reach the people who so desperately need it.

Medical Group Faults US Militarization of Haitian Relief

The US, meanwhile, is being accused of prioritizing the delivery of troops and military equipment over direly needed aid. Doctors Without Borders legal director Francoise Saulnier says a plane carrying over twelve tons of aid was turned back from landing three times this week.

Francoise Saulnier: "Now everything has been mixed together, and the urgent and vital attention to the people have been delayed, while military logistic—which is useful, but not on day three, not on day four, but maybe on day eight—this military logistic has really jammed the airport and led to this mismanagement, real mismanagement of vital issues." In responding to the massive earthquake the United States population gave generously. The ten-dollar donations by cell phone to the American Red Cross for Haitian aid rapidly overwhelmed the servers that were set up to handle them. It is interesting in this regard to check the transits for the U.S. chart – with transiting Pluto opposed to the Jupiter-Venus conjunction in the U.S. 7th house, referring to generosity toward other nations. Also transiting Neptune and Chiron were found directly on U.S. Moon, symbolizing the American people. This is consistent with a spiritual impulse of sacrifice and a compassion recognition of others' pain.

This Neptune transit to U.S. Moon is emphasized next month also, most especially once again at the time of the mid-month New Moon, which conjuncts Neptune. Also at that time, transiting Neptune makes a bi-quintile aspect to the U.S. Midheaven, as Pluto and Saturn continue to impact that sensitive point. The Midheaven of the U.S. chart refers to the leadership of the country, most particularly to the Obama administration. So we might see compassion evidenced by the administration at this time, or perhaps only confusion and deception, since Neptune is such a slippery planetary archetype. Time will tell.

A Look at the Transits to the Chart of Haiti

A glance at the chart of modern Haiti's founding, January 1, 1804, as given in Nick Campion's Book of World Horoscopes, p. 193 (see chart) is quite revealing regarding the power of Astrology to lend meaning to the events of our lives. You can see that the current Saturn – Pluto square is all over this chart, since a Saturn conjunction with Haiti's Saturn is underway. Saturn was stationing on Haiti's Saturn at the time of the occurrence. Further, the Moon at the time of the earthquake was at a similar degree to transiting Neptune and Chiron, transiting Sun and Venus, and transiting Uranus, all lined up with Haiti's Neptune and Haiti's Mercury/Venus midpoint. The Solar Eclipse a few days later exactly squared Haiti's Neptune.

These transits point up Neptune the transformer. It is not well-known, but Neptune too can be a transformer, just as Pluto is. Neptune changes you by dissolving the knottiness of the past so that you have the chance to breathe again. In this case, with Neptune involved, it may well be that just as attitudes toward Haiti on the part of the Western world will soften, inevitably, as the world reaches out to help this terribly damaged country to rebuild, so too will the attitudes of Haitians soften in response. And this is part of the transformation that must happen, in this pivotal decade, as we leave behind the mistakes of the past and move forward into a time when we treasure every aspect of our human family rather than one particular tribe (our own) and when as a culture we begin to respect and celebrate all the colors of the rainbow.

Disturbing Revelations

Last month we were talking about the possibility for surprising and possibly disturbing revelations, in the third week of December, from the 16th to the 24th, when Pluto in square aspect to the U.S. Midheaven would be highlighted. The First Quarter Moon of the 24th was mentioned as a particularly dicey time since the Sun exactly conjoined with transiting Pluto on that day.

Of course the two biggest stories of the month took place around this time, first the break-down of the Copenhagen talks and secondly the health care bill that finally passed the Senate on December 24th.

This was the text of a news story appearing on the 19th as the talks in were breaking down, a defeat in part to U.S. global leadership:

It's 2.30 am and dejection is palpable in the halls of Copenhagen's Bella Centre, home to the last two week's climate talks. Obama has left; there's another draft deal being passed around; Gordon Brown says he's happy; the G77 block of poor nations is crying bloody murder; delegates are leaving in droves, looking tired and depressed. The sense, generally, is that the last two years have been a waste of time.

Outside, meanwhile, hundreds have gathered carrying big yellow signs that scream "climate shame".

The draft text is the most vague we've seen so far, with all specific targets for cutting emissions stripped out, replaced by a list of the commitments that various nations have already made. Speaking to the US press before jetting back to Washington DC, Obama himself suggested it was "a case where instead of taking one step forward we may have taken two steps back". A week ago, given the number of world leaders involved, this degree of failure seemed impossible. Now, it seems inevitable.

This raises the question that will reverberate down the corridors of time about whether the government of any nation is really serious about climate change. The climactic configurations of the next few years point to conflicts and difficulties to be resolved, and this is surely one of them.

Then the Senate health care bill that came up also in this latter part of the month of December is also huge for America – the first major change in health care in many years and an attempt to fix an extremely dysfunctional system as is widely perceived. The final bill that passed in the early hours of Christmas Eve, the same day as the Quarter Moon, is also very much a mixed bag; some have praised it as at least a first step while others revile it and say that it does not go nearly far enough. The relevant transits, of Saturn in conjunction to the U.S. Midheaven while Pluto squares this same point, and touched off by the First Quarter Moon exactly square transiting Pluto, speak to the issue being transformative for the way that government in this country operates and is viewed. The Pluto transit to the U.S. Midheaven is all about the transformation of that government by trials that will test its efficacy, and on that regard it could be said that: (a) the system worked, a bill was produced and that (b) the system did not work very well for the common man, but more for the moneyed interests that are also at stake here, that is, the insurance industry's profits, which are considered sacrosanct.

Either way it is plain to see that things are changing rapidly today in America.

Over the next few months, the significant transits are the same ones that we have already seen, namely the Saturn – Pluto square that aligns with the U.S. Midheaven, effective for the next nine months at least, plus the Uranus in square to the U.S Midheaven, opposed by Saturn, which really comes into its own in late May 2010, and the Uranus – Pluto square, which is active over the coming several years, and which becomes exact for the first time in June of 2012. Taken in sum, these transits mean nothing less than the transformation of America, and of the American life style, a transformation that was began in 2001 with the Saturn – Pluto opposition that was active then across the U.S Ascendant. This touched off the transit of Pluto through the First House of the U.S. chart, and eventually in opposition to the U.S. Sun degree (beyond 2012).

In the near future, the Solar Eclipse of January 15th conjuncts U.S Pluto, while transiting Pluto still squares the U.S. Midheaven, so more that fireworks are obviously indicated, with the forces for progressive change still duking it out with the forces for conservative reactivity. The remaining debates on health care promise to be every bit as bloody as the first have been, and maybe even more so, as the State of the Union message looms in the same mid-month timeframe.

American Hypocrisies

Last month as we discussed the New and Full Moons of November and December, it seemed obvious that just as there had been many troubling news stories surfacing around this beginning and mid-month time period in recent months, in November too further revelations would follow. These stories center around the various hypocrisies that are currently going down in American (and Western) society. Are we hard at work fixing the environment or just talking? Are we a nation that bails out the poor and those not covered by health care or are we perhaps (dare to say it) a nation built mostly for the rich these days that bails out Wall Street first? Then there is the military presence that could build up in Afghanistan (and that continues in Iraq) and that has been discussed for many weeks now. Is our military presence in these regions designed to help the people there and protect us from terrorists or to help ourselves to important resources? Time will tell, but it does seem like the lessons of Vietnam were only imperfectly learned...

Unless humans act now, seafood may disappear by 2048, concludes the lead author of a new study that paints a grim picture for ocean and human health.

According to the study, the loss of ocean biodiversity is accelerating, and 29 percent of the seafood species humans consume have already crashed. If the long-term trend continues, in 30 years there will be little or no seafood available for sustainable harvest. See National Geographic.

In other news from the November 2nd Full Moon period, Hamid Karzai was declared the winner of the Afghan election. This story has been brewing for months, but the subtext was the election leading up to the proposed run-off, which was declared fraudulent by the world community. Karzai's opponent feared the same for the run-off, hence his resignation, allowing Karzai to coast to undisputed victory. Nevertheless Karzai's ascension was hailed as legitimate by the U.S State Department. Sec. Of State Hillary Clinton had this to say: "With respect to Afghanistan and Dr. Abdullah's decision, I think that it is his decision to make. Whatever went into that determination is obviously his choice. But I do not think it affects the legitimacy."

Goldman Sachs Secretly Bet on the US Housing Crash

An investigation by the McClatchy Newspapers has found that banking giant Goldman Sachs made secret bets on an imminent housing crash while selling off billions in soon-to-be-worthless securities. In 2006 and 2007, the bank reportedly peddled more than $40 billion in securities backed by at least 200,000 risky home mortgages, but never told the buyers it was secretly betting that a sharp drop in US housing prices would send the value of those securities plummeting. Meanwhile the December 10th issue of Rolling Stone , release in mid-November, came out with an article that accused President Obama of staffing his Treasury and related departments with former Goldman-Sachs directors and associates, listing a total of 14 names from Treasury, NEC (National Economic Council) and State.

And of course the biggest story involving the military this past month also emerged in its first week, namely the shooting that left 13 dead and 30 wounded on Ft. Hood. The shooting took place on November 5th.

Gates Blocks Release of Torture Photos

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has blocked the further release of any photographs depicting abuse or torture of foreign prisoners, saying their release would endanger American soldiers. Federal courts have repeatedly rejected the government's arguments to block the release of the photographs, but Congress voted last month to give Gates new powers to keep them private. US Military Suicides at Record Level

A top US military officer has confirmed Army suicides will reach a new record annual high. General Peter Chiarelli, the US Army Vice Chief of Staff, said Tuesday the number of soldiers to take their own lives in 2009 has already matched last year's record of 140. The figure does not include an additional seventy-one soldiers who killed themselves this year after leaving active duty. See Democracy Now.

Wall Street Headed for Record Profits in 2009

New government figures show Wall Street is on pace to have its most profitable year to date. On Tuesday, the New York Comptroller Office said Wall Street profits are set to exceed the record set three years ago, before the onset of the nation's financial meltdown. The four largest firmsÃ³Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan ChaseÃ³took in $22.5 billion in profits through September. The top six banks set aside $112 billion for salAries and bonuses over the same period. In a statement, New York Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said, "The national economy is slowly improving, but Wall Street has recovered much faster than anyone had envisioned." World Leaders: No Binding Deal on Climate Change Until 2010

President Obama and other world leaders have conceded that a binding deal to combat climate change won't be reached until at least next year. Asia-Pacific leaders, including President Obama, have backed a proposal to only reach an interim political agreement at next month's climate talks in Copenhagen while postponing contentious decisions on emissions targets, financing and technology transfer until sometime in 2010. The delay has frustrated those who feel time is running out to prevent calamitous levels of climate change. See Democracy Now.

Next month, the December 1st Full Moon once more aspects the U.S. Chart, aligning with the Ascendant and with U.S. Uranus while transiting Uranus continues to square and oppose U.S. Mars and Neptune even more closely. President Obama is scheduled to make an important announcement December 1st regarding troop build-ups in Afghanistan. Since Uranus is involved, there could be surprises there. Other sensitive dates in December include December 16th, when the New Moon squares U.S. Neptune and also from the 21st to the 24th, when transiting Pluto and Saturn in aspect to the U.S. MC will be highlighted.

With Pluto and Saturn still square to each other and Uranus about to join them, the first half of 2010 looks to be even dicier than November has already demonstrated. Fasten your seat belts, and continue to spread awareness.

Deadliest Days Ever for U.S. Forces

Last month, we mentioned two times in the course of October when the transits would be particularly severe due to the Full Moon of October 3rd being conjunct U.S. Saturn in the tenth (government and administration) while the subsequent New Moon was close to the U.S. Mars-Neptune square; this as transiting Neptune, Chiron, Uranus and Eris were also aspecting this important set of points, presaging further troubles at that time, especially with regard to the military.

Indeed the headlines and key stories from these two periods reflect these trends. The first weekend of the month saw one of the deadliest days ever for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, just as the recent Afghan election was set to be overturned due to accusations of fraud, and as the administration was considering sending in more troops.

Leading up to the New Moon weekend of October 17th, it was decided that Afghanistan would need to hold a run-off election, and that places the U.S.-appointed president Hamid Karzai in danger of losing his power. Meanwhile President Obama hesitates to give a response to the local commander of U.S. forces in his request for up to 40,000 additional troops. It was also revealed at this time that drone attacks in Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan have tripled from the days of the Bush administration, revealing a policy of supposed targeted killing of terrorist personnel. This policy results in collateral damage accounting for the deaths of civilians at many of the strikes.

Meanwhile, a survey of President Obama's efforts in New Orleans gave him only a D+ in improving the situation there, after 9 months on the job, where 60,000 abandoned properties attest to the lack of meaningful effort at restoration. Dozens were arrested in protests of health insurance companies as civil unrest in this country grows.

In the last month of the year, hotspots will continue to be represented by the New and Full Moons at the beginning and middle of the month. On November 2nd, the Full Moon aspects the U.S. Sun degree, just as transiting Uranus squares U.S. Mars and opposes U.S. Neptune, and while transiting Pluto continues to square the U.S. Midheaven. There could be sudden activity at this time along the road of thorough-going transformation that the country is certain to traverse over these next few years. The New Moon of November 16th activates these same sensitive points, and emphasizes the Neptunian factor of deception and confusion, so that issues of misleading statements from the government and within the military might once again arise. These years leading up to 2012 will prove a time of great change for this country, indeed the world; and that will indeed be difficult. But it is change that has in many ways been long overdue, and this society will ultimately be the better for it.

Deception and the Military

Last month I had indicated that in the "week beyond the Full Moon on September 11th" there would likely be some further information coming to light regarding deception and the military. This was because that Quarter Moon and subsequent difficult New Moon triggered the radix Neptune–Mars square in the United States chart.

This prediction jibes nicely with the unexpected release of a new book on the life and death of Pat Tillman, football star turned war hero and poster boy for the military in the months following the invasion of Iraq. The new Tillman biography by Jon Krakauer, was released on September 15 and discussed on television on September 11th. In it there are serious allegations and even further layers to the famous cover up. Of course, Pat Tillman is one of the most serious and well-documented cases of deception in high places regarding the military, when his death in an incident of friendly fire was blamed on enemy action. Amazingly, this book reveals that when he was first deployed in Iraq – before being transferred to Afghanistan – Pat Tillman was also involved in another famous incident of deception on the part of the military; the staged "rescue" of Private Jessica Lynch. Another incident that was big news regarding the military first came up in mid-September. This is the issue of whether to send more troops to Afghanistan. The general in charge of U.S. forces there is asking for 4500 more troops, but the White House doesn't feel that this idea would fly very well with an American population increasingly opposed to either war. This story was breaking on September 16th: "The nation's top military officer told Congress Tuesday the US will likely need more troops in Afghanistan. Admiral Mike Mullen, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made the comments in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee." – Democracy Now.

Finally, in a tacit admission of governmental false advertising in action, there was this story, also from the same mid-month period:

President Obama has decided to abandon the Bush administration's so-called "missile-defense" system in Eastern Europe. The Wall Street Journal reports the White House based its decision on an assessment that Iran's long-range missile program hasn't significantly progressed. The move marks one of the Obama administration's sharpest reversals of a major Bush administration foreign policy to date. The Bush White House claimed the missile system was intended to thwart a potential Iranian attack. But critics widely denounced it as a first-strike weapon for hitting Iran or other targets.

All these stories are very revealing of where there is talk for the sake of appearance and where there is actual action in the role that the U.S. military plays in American foreign policy.

In the current month, the October 3rd Full Moon makes a T-square to the U.S. Sun degree, indicating that from the very start of the month the beat goes on, as far as troubling incidents are concerned. The mid-month New Moon squares U.S. Pluto – Mercury opposition, but as it does so it also trines transiting Neptune and the U.S. Moon, so that we might feel the potential grace in the revelations that continue to unfold at this time. The truth could set us free. Probably the most significant time in all of the next 31 days is the entrance of Saturn into Libra at almost the very end of the month. This is likely to be a time of great crisis in the affairs of the nation as whatever has been overlooked, ignored, or swept under the rug begins to catch up with us as a society. On into November there will be some very interesting news stories surfacing accompanied by necessary readjustments to the national consciousness, as the outer planet configurations leading up to 2012 continue to develop.

Obama Administration's Muddled Stance

In the current month's transits there is quite a lot of activity for the chart of the United States. This is the chart dating from July 4, 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was signed. These highly significant events occur mostly during the first half of September. This is because as Saturn opposes Uranus and Pluto stations in the first degree of Capricorn, these three archetypal powerhouses line up with several sensitive points in the U.S. chart. The various events are detailed below.

The September 4th Full Moon will be active in the U.S. chart, and will likely serve as a harbinger for the more climactic mid-month timing. At the time of the Full Moon, Saturn is exactly conjunct U.S Neptune, while the Sun and Moon trigger U.S Saturn, meaning that certain areas of relative fuzziness surrounding the executive branch will not only continue but become exacerbated. I am referring for one thing to the Obama administration's stance on health care, which will surely loom as a giant issue for the entire nation in the coming weeks and months. Although talking up the virtues of health care reform in this country in a big way, this administration has been rather short on specifics, even taking the most popular option off the official table, namely a so-called "single payer system" such as Canada, Australia and Great Britain currently enjoy. Of course this option is strongly opposed by the health insurance industry, which could lose billions. These transits seem to indicate that that administration's stand on this issue will become if anything, even more muddled over the next few weeks, and that some signal of this may well be sent even before Labor Day. Another area in which the administration seems to be talking in one way and acting in another is with regard to the issue of habeas corpus rights for prisoners in U.S. run institutions like Guantanamo. After announcing policy changes toward granting habeas corpus with great fanfare, including the closing of Guantanamo, the justice department has moved in just the opposite direction with respect to individual cases such as that of Mohammed Jawad (See truthout article) and also for the prisoners of Abu Ghraib and Bagram. These are the types of issues, involving official deception, which are likely to become revived during September.

These latter cases involve the military, and they and others like them where military operations are given media spin of one kind or another, are even more likely to receive renewed coverage a week beyond the Full Moon on September 11th – which is not only the 8th anniversary of 9-11 but also a tension-producing Last Quarter Moon that conjuncts and squares U.S. Mars, symbolizing the military in this country. At this time Saturn and Uranus continue to conjunct U.S. Neptune. This is also the same day that transiting Pluto stations direct – resuming its forward motion into Capricorn, in almost perfect square with the Libra U.S. Midheaven that symbolizes the leadership of the country including the administration. Transformation is still the watchword for America, becoming especially prominent in November and December when Saturn squares Pluto in early Libra. Over the week following, as Mercury retrogrades across the U.S. Midheaven also, and as Saturn and Uranus draw closer to a perfect opposition, further information is bound to come to light concerning the deception in high places that still continues long after the Bush white house has been dismantled.

With the degree of the Saturn-Uranus opposition and this September 18th New Moon aspecting U.S. Mercury as well as U.S. Neptune, the media including the entertainment media will likely be involved.

Iraqi Oil Contracts

In the previous month's column we had felt that during the time period of the previous New Moon that opposed Pluto there would be some factors that would come to light and that would powerfully affect the United States, since Pluto is currently transiting in square to the U. S. Midheaven. Here is a sample of the headlines from this period of time last month, just after the New Moon of the 22nd:

On Monday June 22nd, Court Declines to Hear Valerie Plame Lawsuit. This refers to the Supreme Court deciding to uphold the Bush administration's policy of keeping the lid on the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame, which has been shown to implicate the former administration at the very highest levels, including the former Vice President and also key White House strategist Karl Rove. The leak to the press of Ms Plame's identity as an agent was a felony, and had a fairly sordid motive since it was done in retaliation for the denouncing of Bush by her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson. This is the scandal that goes back to the very outset of the Iraq war, and that simply will not go away, and rightly so, since the upholders of the law were the very ones who were breaking the law.

On Tuesday the 23rd we had: Insurance Companies: Public Health Option Would Be "Devastating" referring to the battle against single-payer health insurance, something that the American public has shown that it wants, but that would threaten the industry's profits.

Finally the biggest issue of all for the national image, the preliminary headline involving the Iraqi oil contracts:

The Iraqi government is preparing to sell off large oil contracts to foreign companies for the first time since nationalizing its oil industry in 1972. An auction for developing six national oil fields is scheduled for next week. Companies taking part in the bidding include Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch Shell and Russia's Lukoil. The Wall Street Journal calls the auction "a welcome-back party for Big Oil."

This issue is still very much a breaking news story during the opening weeks of July, as the negotiations have begun in earnest for what the oil companies will eventually demand or have to settle for, and calls into question the motive for the invasion as the left has consistently maintained.

This will obviously become a developing story over the next six months, while Pluto continues to closely aspect U.S. Midheaven and while Neptune and Jupiter conjunct U.S. Moon degree, representing the public. These transits suggest that the image of the United States will suffer in the eyes of the world as a result of these maneuverings, that the public will take an optimistic and potentially high-minded approach, and that changes are in store for the way this country continues to do business.

In July these transits continue with little change, and are highlighted again by the lunations. The eclipses of July 7th and July 21st will once again be likely times for further developments in these important areas.

More Hard Times to Come for the U.S. Economy

Last month I indicated that there would be more hard times to come for the U.S. economy, based largely on Pluto's transit to the U.S. Midheaven. Of course there have been many somewhat negative indicators, including the pending bankruptcy of General Motors which was announced in the middle of last month. Another scandal that spells trouble for the image of the United States, especially abroad, is the revelation that photos exist of rape and sexual abuse. This is the material that president Obama has chosen not to release fearing retaliations to American service personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is of course a very Plutonian matter, and affects the image of specifically the U.S. military. Not surprisingly, Venus was conjunct Eris in sextile to U.S. Mars on May 27th, when some of the worst allegations were made. For this entire time frame, including the current month, transiting Chiron is also very close to the U.S. Moon degree, representing the public. Chiron in this case would symbolize the psychic pain of the American people in reaction to the news that we routinely tortured and abused prisoners during the Iraqi invasion. There is also the potential for healing as this information begins to get out, so that responsible actions can potentially be taken.

This month, once again the transit of Pluto to the U.S. Midheaven is featured, and even closer in degree than earlier. This aspect is greatly emphasized by the June 22nd New Moon, which opposes Pluto almost exactly. The Sun and Moon also conjunct U.S. Venus on this day, while Venus aspects the Midheaven. There undoubtedly remain further stages of unraveling still to come over the next thirty days, and particularly at the time of this quite powerful New Moon.

Trials and Tribulations for the American Military Machine

Last month we stated that April 2nd to the 9th would be a time of trials and tribulations for the American administration and its military machine, with the possibility of deception surfacing. This was due to transits affecting U.S. Sun and also its Mars – Neptune square. It turns out that April 2nd was the day of massive protests at the G20 summit in London, as world leaders gathered in the midst of an increasing economic melt-down, and after the Obama administration had put so much money into the banking system with so little actual oversight. One group of protestors wrote “thieves” on the wall of a London bank, and one person died in the protest. The next day, NATO’s 60th anniversary summit in the city of Strasbourg met with hundreds of protesters. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets.

In the week to follow it became clear that violence was increasing in Iraq, even as President Obama requested nearly $84 billion in war funding. There were also tens of thousands of Iraqi protestors on the 6th anniversary of the invasion.

Of course the biggest story involving deception and the military from April would be the release of the Bush administration’s torture memos, authorizing torture and making arguments for its legality, together with the assurance from the Obama administration that CIA operatives who followed these guidelines with prisoners would be spared from prosecution. This story significantly broke on April 17th, the same day as the Last Quarter Moon which exactly conjuncted U.S. Pluto. The timing on this was quite similar to that of another related story, namely that the Spanish attorney general has recommended against prosecuting six Bush administration officials for promoting the torture of Guantanamo prisoners, yielding to pressure from the Obama administration.

The above stories indicate that the Neptune–Mars square in the U.S chart is alive and well, if ‘well’ is the applicable word. The transits of April highlighted this aspect.
In the current month, the dates that stand out are May 8th and the 16th - 17th, and May 24th. May 16th is when Saturn stations direct in sextile to U.S. Sun. The Full Moon of the 8th as well as the New Moon of the 24th aspect transiting Pluto, just as Pluto squares the U.S Midheaven and opposes U.S. Venus. We might unfortunately see further revelations during this month regarding the eroding situation for the U.S. economy.

Deception, Illusion and Idealism

Last month we mentioned the 10th of March as a time when there might arise further issues of deception, illusion and idealism, especially in regard to military matters. This is because the characteristic Neptune square Mars in the U.S. chart was triggered by the Full Moon, transiting Saturn and transiting Uranus, while transiting Mars conjuncted U.S. Moon.

Obama Admits US Isn't Winning War in Afghanistan; Considers Talks with Taliban

In an interview with the New York Times, President Obama admitted the US is not winning the war in Afghanistan. His comment came weeks after he ordered 17,000 more troops to fight as part of an escalation of the seven-year-old war. Obama also revealed that the US is considering reaching out to moderate elements of the Taliban, much as it did with Sunni militias in Iraq.

These last three headlines point out the increasingly serious world situation that the U.S. faces in its attempts to provide the world with military solutions to pressing social problems, such as the tribal splits between factions in the Middle East and in Afghanistan.

Perhaps the most startling headline, in view of this saintly man's known restraint in such pronouncements:

Dalai Lama: China Has Turned Tibet into "Hell on Earth"

The Dalai Lama marked his fiftieth year in exile earlier today by demanding "meaningful autonomy" for his Tibetan homeland, where Chinese authorities have tightened security to stifle protests against their rule. The Dalai Lama slammed China for bringing "untold suffering and destruction" to Tibet and turning the region at times into a "hell on earth." His words came on the fiftieth anniversary of a failed uprising against Chinese troops, which led to his exile.

All these items reflect a growing realization that the solution to the world's problems can no longer be considered to depend on military methods; that this is an illusion endemic to the American foreign policy (represented by Mars in the 7th house of partnership in the U.S. chart, and incidentally square to Neptune). Instead the world and the United States must begin to rely on a broader and more high-road manifestation of Neptune that reflects compassion and the unity of humankind. This is where the idealism of the American people would like things to go, and where perhaps things could go if the illusion of progress through military might could be transcended.

In the current month, the First Quarter Moon of Thursday, April 2nd, is likely to provide a moment of tension, since it conjuncts and squares U.S. Sun, while aspecting Mars in trine with U.S. Sun and inconjunct U.S. Saturn. The outer planet aspects that have been so powerful lately are also still in effect and likely to be triggered at this time as well, and at the Full Moon of April 9th. Transiting Pluto is opposing U.S. Venus, the chart's 10th house ruler, while also squaring the Midheaven, indicating the depth of the transformation that this country is in the midst of. More and deeper revelations will surely follow in the weeks and months ahead.

Tricky politics in the new era

The Astrology of the US chart reveals that there is potentially more going on in government circles right now than meets the eye and this indeed seems to be the case when we closely examine the facts of the matter. This is because transiting Uranus is just opposite US Neptune, and the recent Full Moon configurations, including the one for March 10th, have triggered this aspect. Meanwhile, Saturn has made one pass in close conjunction to US Neptune with another on the way in late August. With US Neptune so activated we think of oil, and confusion or even deception in high places, as well as support for the high ideals of this country.

The high ideals are certainly evident in the mood of the electorate in hopeful approval of the new president. But the deception is there as well, as evidenced in some recent news items. This is an exchange between Bill Moyers and MIT economist Simon Johnson, a guest on his news show, dating from February 13:

Bill Moyers: And, yet, Secretary Geithner's chief-of-staff is the former lobbyist for Goldman Sachs. How - serious question - how do they make a dispassionate judgment about how to deal with Goldman Sachs when they're so intertwined with Goldman Sachs' mindset?

Simon Johnson: … the new administration has a lot of rules about lobbying. And they have rules that basically say, I think, as understood the rules, when they were first presented, I was very impressed. They basically said, "We're not going to hire lobbyists into the administration. There has to be some sort of cooling off period."

    Bill Moyers: And the next day Obama exempted a number of people from that very rule that he had just proclaimed.

    Simon Johnson: Yes. It's a problem. It's a huge problem.

    Bill Moyers: So here's the trillion dollar question that I take from your blog, that I read at the beginning, quote, "Can this person," your new economic strategist, in this case Geithner, "really break with the vested elite that got you into this much trouble?" Have you seen any evidence this week that he's going to be tough with these guys?

    Simon Johnson: I'm trying to be positive. I'm trying to be supportive. I like the administration. I voted for the president. The answer to your question is, no, I haven't seen anything. But you know, perhaps next week I will. But right now, as we speak, I have a bad feeling in my stomach.

This is but one indication that there may be some difficulty in the new administration being able to meet the high ideals expressed by Barack Obama during his campaign. Another would be the actual carrying out of the anti-war platform that he ran on. Even though there has been a plan for a draw-down of troops in Iraq, there has been mention of "50,000 advisors" even after that draw-down has been achieved. And sending 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan, while matching campaign promises, is not exactly an anti-war move. It is possible, as has been alleged, that more civilians are being currently killed in Afghanistan by the US army than by the Taliban. If true, this is also a serious problem for this president.

Also, even though President Obama has with great fanfare made plans for the closing of Guantanamo, ending the imprisonment without trial for some 200 prisoners there, his justice department has simultaneously refused the right of prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan the right to a trial, using exactly the same argument as the Bush administration.

All of this is disturbing, and matches the astrological determination that the Obama administration, inaugurated under a void of course moon and Mercury retrograde, might begin after a while to look a little different than the promise that was initially held out, once in office.

Barack Obama and the Eclipses of Change

As we congratulate ourselves on the positive mood that is currently sweeping the country – and it is with a well-deserved sense of optimism that we greet this vibrant new leader and his lofty new vision for America – we are also aware that several astrological factors are more problematic. For one thing, as we all know, Mercury is retrograde. Since Mercury was retrograde and the Moon was void of course when Mr. Obama took the oath of office, that moment presages a certain degree of difficulty is seeing that lofty vision through. The Moon was famously void of course when Nixon was sworn in after being elected in 1972, shortly before the Watergate scandal came to light and he was forced to resign. And Mercury was retrograde when Nixon took the oath for his first term of office in 1969. He had campaigned on a rapid end to the war in Vietnam that turned instead to an escalation. Twenty years later, in 1989, George H. W. Bush took the oath with Mercury retrograde, and the economy hit recession, and a new war began. During the campaign, the senior Bush had stated "read my lips: no new taxes" but his 1990 decision to renege may have cost him a second term. Since this inauguration chart has both, with Mercury retrograde conjunct the Sun as well, we may well have some reason to worry.

It needn't be all that grim. At least the concept is good: that America needs to turn it around. It's just that turning it around may prove in the final analysis just a wee bit more difficult than we all would like to think. A comical example of the effect of Mercury retrograde was revealed in the very taking of the oath itself. Although the constitution requires a word-for-word recital, Chief Justice Roberts misspoke one line, then waited for the President-elect's response. Mr. Obama, aware that the line was incorrect, waited also. At this point Mr. Roberts re-stated the line correctly, but Mr. Obama repeated it as originally and incorrectly stated. The oath was re-administered successfully the next evening.

As the presidency of Barack Obama begins, we and the rest of the world face two eclipses, one that begins the Chinese New Year on January 26th, and the Lunar Eclipse of February 9th. These eclipses trigger the on-going Saturn - Uranus opposition that will become exact in February. Change is in the air, and resistance to change is also very present with us right now. How do these two eclipses hit the chart of the president? It's a question that yields some very important information.

On January 26th with Mercury still retrograde, the eclipse in Aquarius, President Obama's rising sign, is close to his Jupiter degree (). Actually, Jupiter in the sky is only a few degrees past his, and conjuncted as well by this potent New Moon. There is ample evidence for the president's Jupiter return in the amazing level of popularity that he currently enjoys, over 82% approval, contrasted with the outgoing administration's 23. And his decision to reverse many of the Bush policies is welcome news in most quarters. Even the conservatives are in support of his transition. The eclipse Sun and Moon degree, 6 + Aquarius, also hits his Mars and Neptune. There is an important Sabian Symbol that accompanies this degree: A child born of an eggshell. Does this symbol speak to the fragile nature of these times? It is also a symbol of self-creation. For this degree symbol, Marc Edmond Jones has "A highly individual and completely unlimited resourcefulness," while Dane Rudhyar says it indicates a rebirth "free from the inertia of the past." And it's true that in some sense the past has ceased to exist.

The eclipse powerfully hits the US chart as well. Barack Obama's Mars degree, the same degree as US Neptune, is hit with a sesquiquadrate aspect, indicating tension. Also the president's Neptune degree is hit, by square. Mars and Neptune in the US chart, which are square each other, are hit by the eclipse degree of the Sun and Moon which is sesquiquadrate to them both. All this Mars and Neptune reminds us of the various meanings that can take, including deception and the military, including action involving oil. Since both of these planetary archetypes are powerfully configured in the charts of both the president and the country, we had better pay careful attention to these aspects. As far as the US chart, difficulties in the Neptune department are hardly new. See my recent Zodiactivism blog entries for some ideas there. As far as the president's chart goes, we might suppose that ideals, perhaps bordering on illusion, maybe even confusion, could come up. This would apply to the entire thirty days of this lunation cycle until the next New Moon. It might be a good time to cut him some slack. Or it might be a time when deception on the part of others will come to play an important role. Since President Obama's Neptune is located in the 9th house of his chart, his high idealism with regard to matters of higher mind could well be shown and tested in some way. For this placement – true also but in a different sense for the US chart, the TimePassages software has in part: "Your challenge lies in relying on your considerable inner vision to unfold your own unique pathway, to make concrete and real your flights of consciousness to other realms, and bring this vision back with you into society at large."

The January 26th eclipse Sun and Moon degree also aspect President Obama's Mars degree, a sesquiquadrate. This is a testing time for him and for the entire country, as the nation's new leadership must comport itself as best as it can in a time of war. Altogether, at the time of this eclipse, the president's Mars degree is being conjuncted by Saturn, opposed by Uranus and Venus, and trined by Mars and retrograde Mercury, all fairly exact aspects. Retrograde Mercury, in Capricorn, also conjuncted the president's natal Saturn on the day before.

Now, there is another eclipse on the horizon in these last days of January, the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse of Monday, February 9th. This eclipse, in the 22nd degree of Aquarius and Leo, lies directly across within a few degrees of the president's Ascendant – Descendant axis (). The Sabian symbols are: "A rug placed on the floor for children to play on" and "A carrier pigeon." Marc Edmond Jones speaks of "Service of life at large to the special requirements of individual understanding," and of "the deepening of every potential of self-hood [in service]." The Moon also conjuncts his natal Uranus, located in late Leo near his Descendant.

All in all this monthly period leading up to February 24th represents a testing and an amazing time for the country and for the president, when his powers of competition and taking care of business will be highlighted, perhaps with more frustrations and setbacks than we would have hoped. This will also be a time of personal challenge for him when his need to nurture his family in spite of these circumstances will be brought into prominence. We wish him well.

Some Reflections on Idealism and Deception

With Neptune in the U.S. chart so triggered by the current configurations, and representing as it does both idealism and deception, it is appropriate to reflect on the recent revelations concerning the disclosure of fraud on the part of trusted Wall Street insider Bernard Madoff, who turned himself in on December 11 just before the balloon collapsed on a decades-long $20 billion to $50 billion scheme in which investors were paid from new investors coming in until there were no more new entrants to keep ahead of the consequences. See truthout.org for more details. But first a little background on the timing of these transits.

Saturn and Uranus opposed each other in November, exact for the first of five passes, on the very day of the U.S. presidential elections. The degree that they occupied was only a few degrees away from U.S. Neptune, with Saturn conjunct, and a few degrees away from U.S. Mars, forming a T-square to U.S. Mars, and triggering the natal Mars - Neptune square in the U.S. chart.

Then, Saturn moved on, and while still opposing Uranus formed an inconjunct with transiting Neptune over the latter half of November, and on into December, all the while getting closer and closer to the exact degree of U.S. Neptune. Finally, in this recent period, Saturn will station on December 31st within a degree of U.S. Neptune, while Neptune in the sky is inconjunct it to the exact degree and minute, and while transiting Venus conjuncts exactly U.S. Moon, representing the public.

There is idealism present in the Neptune - Mars square, together with the possibility of passionate action (Mars) in support of the idealistic conception (Neptune). These are known national characteristics. We have as well the potential for deceptive action, another Neptunian keyword. Here's a quote from Mr. Madoff:

"In today's regulatory environment, it's virtually impossible to violate rules ... and this is something the public really doesn't understand ... but it's impossible for you to go - for a violation to go undetected. Certainly not for a considerable amount of time." -Bernard L. Madoff, just over a year before turning himself in for perpetrating what may prove to be the largest financial fraud in history.Many people were taken in, and many more must have turned a blind eye to their suspicions, in what amounts to an indictment of the entire American financial system.

The blatant lies surrounding what was really going on inside is eerily reminiscent of Enron. This was perhaps the first warning in recent history of the potential for deception on the part of the U.S. banking industry. The demise of Enron took place in August of 2001. The banks and accounting firms were complicit. This was a very vicious case indeed, where upper management lied their way through the incipient disaster, including deceiving their employees and their stockholders, after inflating the books and also incidentally after participating in gaming the California electric grid once it had been deregulated at the behest of republicans in the state legislature. Of course Enron CEO Ken Lay was a close confidant of George W. Bush, not coincidentally. In early 2001 also, there were meetings in the White House held by the office of the Vice President on exactly how to carve up Iraqi oil fields once an American invasion had been accomplished. What were the transits at this time? Well, of course Pluto was opposed at that time by Saturn, and the two were transiting the Ascendant and Descendant of the U.S. chart, signaling that massive transformation for America was in the works. More significantly, transiting Uranus was occupying the same degree of Aquarius where transiting Neptune currently resides, making an exact inconjunct aspect to U.S. Neptune, symbolizing an important case of deception (Neptune) suddenly revealed (Uranus). But this was the tip of the iceberg, as subsequent revelations of corporate malfeasance have continued to show themselves. The recent $700 billion bailout of Wall Street firms with little or no guidelines on how they will spend the money is another case in point. Is this a case of idealism or deception?

In 2009, Saturn and Uranus will once again be opposed, in February and in August-September, with Neptune still in the picture. With the station of Saturn on U.S. Neptune looming as the New Year begins, and the August 2009 conjunction of Saturn with U.S. Neptune coming up, as Uranus opposes it, one wonders when the other shoes will drop. There may be many more surprises before we as a nation are out of these particular woods.

Neptune in the U.S. Chart

Since U.S. Neptune is actively triggered in the December and January time frame, especially at the time of the Full Moons of December 12th and January 10th, it may be useful to cover this information once again. The configuration in the U.S. Chart that is extremely compelling is the Mars – Neptune square, which is very tight.

This Mars – Neptune square has been triggered by several recent factors. In the first years of the Iraq war, Pluto in Sagittarius opposed Mars and squared Neptune. Currently there is the aspect of transiting Uranus in opposition to U.S. Neptune, which will complete in its last pass on March 9, 2009, plus transiting Saturn in conjunction with U.S. Neptune in December and January, triggered by the Full Moons of December 12th and January 10th.

Since the New Year's Day chart for Washington DC

has a stationary and singular Saturn conjunct U.S. Neptune, these themes are very active at the beginning of the New Year as well, and in some sense for the entire year of 2009.

Neptune is located at 22 + degrees of Virgo and is elevated, near the top of the chart and therefore emphasized. It squares U.S. Mars, located in the 7th House of foreign relations at 21+ degrees of Gemini. Neptune is a very slippery planet, and its many meanings all have relevance for the American national personality. U.S. Neptune in square with U.S. Mars means many things, not least of which is the regard for image and illusion that we see everywhere in this country, from movie stars to flashy commercials, from ghetto dwellers fancy cars to the drugs that the affluent buy for escape from any hint of the reality behind the facade.

One of the ways that this square pops up is in regard to deception and the U.S. Military. There is in fact a long record of deception leading to war, and of deception in the course of pursuing a war, all through United States history. In brief, there was the self-sabotage of the battleship Maine in the harbor of Havana, precipitating the Spanish – American war of 1898; the complicity on the part of President Roosevelt in the attack on Pearl Harbor of December 7, 1941 that began the American involvement in WWII (the attack fit his needs precisely to enter the war, so the intelligence that it was coming was never revealed); the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which was manufactured, that resulted in a broader involvement for the United States in Vietnam; the green light given by the state department, falsely, to Saddam Hussein to go into Kuwait; the subsequent scare that incubators were being removed from Kuwaiti hospitals, in a drama performed by the daughter of the U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait before congress, also entirely manufactured; the list goes on and on.

Another symbolism for Neptune involves underground liquids including oil, and the American military presence around the world, including and most obviously of course, Iraq, is very coincident with global oil supplies. Even with Vietnam, there was untapped oil off the coast. Columbia also has oil, and U.S. military aid there exceeds many first world commitments. This connection between oil and the military represents yet another reflection of the Mars – Neptune square in the U.S. chart.

Deception in the case of the military has a current history as well. Recently there was the case of Pat Tillman, the national celebrity football hero and poster boy for the military, who was killed by friendly fire and received the Silver Star posthumously in a failed attempt to cover up the circumstances of his death. Before that, in the early going, there was the filmed 'rescue' of Private Jessica Lynch from an Iraqi hospital where she was being treated for wounds she received in a car accident, and whose handlers were happy to turn her over to the Americans. They had tried once and been repelled by American fire. The soldiers were filmed blazing away as they charged the hospital. Her wounds were said to be resulting from her capture by enemy combatants. All this came out, eventually, in the press, adding more fuel to the fire of charges that the United States had manipulated information in the early conduct of the war and especially in the run-up to it.

One of the more recent disclosures is from the man who was White House spokesman during that phase of the war, Scott McClellan, whose book, just published, is another black eye for the Bush administration. He charges that the intelligence was manipulated leading up to the onset of war. His book was published within a few days of the retrograde of Mercury near U.S. Mars and square U.S. Neptune.

In this post-election time frame, we can observe the same dichotomy of idealism and deception and in relation to the U.S. Military as well. The idealism is obvious as this charming, photogenic and sincere president-elect begins to take the reigns of power. The Neptune archetype was responsible for some of the illusory and idealized (and media-soaked) factors on the national stage last month, and is very powerful again in the present monthly alignments, so that we can expect more of the same. The Full Moon of November 12th triggers transiting Neptune as it trines U.S. Mars, and as Saturn nears its conjunction with U.S. Neptune as well while transiting Uranus opposes it. At the very end of the year Saturn stations retrograde within a degree of U.S. Neptune, and then hits it again in February. The next pass of the Saturn – Uranus opposition is February 4th, so this first month of the new administration next year is likely to be a powerful time in this country that could stimulate both ideals and illusions of what can concretely be accomplished.

In the present month the mid-month timeframe will be the most powerful, and redolent with the unworldly energy of Neptune. Idealism will be present in abundance, together with powerfully enlightened concepts of change that is not only possible but necessary, and also the reality of seeing dreams die that cannot be fulfilled. The sense of this country's beliefs in terms of higher mind will be elevated and placed up on a pedestal.

Will we see the grounding of our ideals in concrete action or the disappointment of their failure to be everything that we wanted? A little of both, no matter who gets in and who is left out in the cold, and no matter who we were pulling for. This country is paying the price for past excess and there just is no easy way out right now.

The Ides of October

From the perspective of mid-month October, the astrology of transits to the U.S. chart is very revealing, considering the suddenness of events in this country lately. In the October skies, Uranus and Saturn are beginning their first of five passes of exact opposition, which will complete on November 4th, Election Day, and as they do they conjunct and oppose U.S. Neptune, symbolizing among other things illusion. The financial picture is partly based on the expectations and the dreams and hopes, and yes, illusions, of investors, and here we see some stress applied to this very factor in the U.S. chart that makes this country such a powerful reservoir of dreams for the rest of the world.

Saturn always limits, but for a reason. We are in other words witnessing a necessary correction. With Uranus involved, the challenges come suddenly, and bring with them a factor of enlightenment. As well as suffering with the fears of the times, we are learning as a nation right now. As the twin powers represented by Saturn and Uranus aspect U.S. Neptune, they also aspect U.S. Mars, tied to Neptune by a potent square aspect, natally, in the chart for July 4, 1776. In the charts of individuals, Mars represents the outward dynamic of energy to accomplish. In the U.S. chart it means the same thing, and also incidentally the military, and also rules the 4th House of real estate and homeland security. Since a T-square is being made from Saturn and Uranus to U.S. Mars, these factors in our national life are being subjected to the push-pull of limitation (Saturn) and wild ideas of future orientation (Uranus); a conflicted sense of stop and go that is reflected in the current stock market yo-yo. We might also note that the possibility is constantly being raised at this time of adventitious action for a better future, represented by Uranus square (and transiting Neptune trine) U.S. Mars -- including the financial stop-gaps the administration is putting forth at this time, and including also the ideas that are constantly being floated right now for green job creation that might get us through.

This is not really news, but maybe the timing of subsequent events could be. The Full Moons of each successive month will emphasize these same factors, with increasing force. Thus the Full Moon of November 12th will strongly aspect transiting Saturn, as Saturn moves to conjunct U.S Neptune (and square U.S. Mars) while the Full Moon of December 12th will square these positions and oppose U.S. Mars exactly. It may well be, in other words, that we ain't seen nothing yet, compared to the final weeks of this climactic year.

September has arrived...

As we head back into the nuts and bolts of our lives and attempt to see how we fit with the larger collective that surrounds us, and in particular the American presidential election, now entering its final phase, it is interesting to find the symbolism of Saturn and Uranus beginning to oppose each other in the current skies. You couldn't ask for a clearer statement of conservative status quo mentality versus the desire for change, and rapid change, change above all else, which many in this country feel is exactly and categorically what is needed. The August 30th New Moon that launched this monthly cycle conjuncted Saturn, while the mid-September Full Moon conjuncts Uranus. Their opposition gets closer and closer as November approaches, becoming exact to the minute on Election Day, November 4th, serving to underscore the intense astrological climate of our times.

Who will win? Well who will win isn't the best question to ask, because the answer is still up in the air. The stars incline, as the ancient dictum goes, they do not compel. Individual free will still counts for almost everything, with a little help from the planetary archetypes to see what energies are part of us right now, the tenor of our times, what we are facing. For it is up to us, to all of us, to succeed in our own way to break through and break free of our prior conditioning that tells us we can't make the changes that are needed in our own lives, and in the life of our country. Hopefully, whichever way we vote come November, we will all win.
